The dum dum (also dunun, dun dun, dounoun, etc..) Percussion instruments are original Mandingo. This family of instruments includes the kenkeni (most acute), the sangban (medium) and the doundounba. Traditionally, these three instruments are played separately by three dumdumfola (players dum dum). A dum dum consists of a wooden, on which two skins are stretched on both ends: a drum head and resonant. The dumdumfola hit with a wooden stick hits the skin. With the other hand, it strikes a bell attached to the dum dum with a metal rod. The dumdum are part of the tradition of the Mandingo empire (which overlaps Guinea, eastern Mali, western Burkina Faso, northern Ivory Coast) and are traditionally played to accompany the Djembe.
